Focus on Function over Form

“Body Positivity” and “Body Acceptance” have been big themes this past year, as they trend as hashtags and movements all over the social media. Sometimes, one might even feel pressured to accept their body as is, ashamed that they might secretly harbour insecurities and love-handles they would like to be rid of. And who can blame them? Despite the increasing efforts and endorsements to include all shapes and sizes, on a day to day basis we are still being bombarded, both overtly and subconsciously, with messages about what an ideal body looks like, and these messages can be difficult to shake.

So what do we do?

For one, let us consider that both messages about accepting our body as it appears, and messages about the “ideal body”, both focus on either accepting or denying the worthiness of our
outward appearance.

What might happen to us, if we shift this focus to our body as something that functions and serves us? What might happen if we shift our efforts to being genuinely grateful for the body that we have and what it does for us on a day to day basis?

Our bodies are essentially machines, and to focus our attention only on the outward appearance is doing us all a disservice. That is because when we judge our bodies harshly based only on outward appearance we are generally left feeling unsatisfied.

And when we judge ourselves negatively we also some self- respect, and our behaviors quickly begin to align themselves with our beliefs. We begin to treat our body with the same disdain we have towards it: we overeat, we do not get enough sleep, we consume more alcohol, etc. In short, we do not show it respect, it begins to show in our bodies, and the cycle continues.

So instead, let us focus on what our bodies do for us, and truly feel grateful.

Here are some examples about how to shift your focus from your body’s outward appearance to a focus on function; where you can be grateful for all of its capabilities, including the ones you do not directly see:

Your eyes give you vision to absorb the world around you. Do you know anyone who has lost the precious gift of sight? How lucky are you to have it. Be grateful for  your eyes.

Your legs are a unique network of muscles, joints, and tendons, designed to allow you to move anywhere your heart desires. Not everyone enjoys the freedom of movement. Be grateful for your legs.

Your liver is your body’s built in filter, cleansing your body of impurities and toxins. It has quite a difficult job and it works so hard you. Be grateful for your liver.

Your hips that seem to have become too wide? Perhaps they widened so that you could safely deliver a healthy child . Be grateful for your hips.

Your skin, that might have wrinkles, is a warrior. As your body’s largest organ, it protects you daily, protecting you from microbes, allergens, and other environmental stressors. Be grateful for your skin.

You get the idea.

If you struggle with your own body-acceptance and self-love, try this practice on a day to day basis, writing as many affirmations of gratitude that you can think of. Try not to repeat them unless you are truly feeling grateful that day for a particular way your body serves you. You will be amazed at how creative you can become as you develop gratitude.

Truly make the space in your mind and heart to be thankful for what your body does for you, and to appreciate that these gifts are not, and will not be, always guaranteed.

When we can shift our focus and really feel in awe of the magic that our body accomplishes for us every day, our minds begin to catch up and you will really begin to feel gratitude for your body.

And as you begin to harvest true respect for your body, your other self-care behaviors will also likely start to change, even to the point where you truly do come to love the image you see in the mirror looking back at you.

Take advantage of the Quiet – Explore Luxembourg

As anyone can tell, August can feel like a ghost town in Luxembourg. As with anything there are advantages to the quiet – take advantage of it.  Take advantage of the quiet of August and reap the benefits.

While there may not be many people here, there are plenty of activities around the city and around the region. Take advantage of all there is to see. Have you been to a farmer’s market or visited the wine countries of Luxembourg, France or Germany? Have you walked around the city or visited the Grund?

Here are just a few areas of Luxembourg that you may not even know about. Take advantage of the quiet of August to explore more than just the city www.visitluxembourg.com

Mullerthal or Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland (Eastern Region)

Mullerthal owes its name to its hilly landscape reminiscent of Switzerland. The Mullerthal is a unique biotope of rock formations that are as beguiling as they are surprising.

Along with Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest, historic city, there is the Mullerthal Trail which is 112 kilometers of magnificent valley trails. The footpaths of Mullerthal will lead you through fields and forests into the heart of a natural setting. Besides demanding hikes, the Mullerthal offers a network of pleasant walks amidst breathtaking panoramas.

Moselle (East/Southern Region)

The Moselle River is one of the major rivers of Luxembourg. It runs along the border with Germany. Moselle lends its name to one of the most beautiful valleys of Luxembourg, famous for its wineries and medieval towns. The valley of the Moselle is famous for its steep hills and vineyards. It is also the birthplace of Luxembourg wines. Hikes, such as the wine route, are a great way to discover this region.

The Moselle region is great for water sports and hikers. Swimming, water skiing or Nordic walking are just some of the activities on and around the River Moselle, as well as river cruises.

Guttland (Central / West Region)

Just outside the city you can find an enchanting setting of charming villages with old farm houses, imposing castles and beautiful natural landscapes. There are hundreds of kilometers of hiking and biking. A highlight of the area is the Valley of the Seven Castles, which extends over 24 kilometers and includes the castles of Mersch, Schoenfels, Koerich, Hollenfels and Septfontaines as well as the two castles of Ansembourg. Medieval festivals and other events breathe new life into the old castle compounds.

Ardennes (Northern Region)

While the Ardennes is mostly known for it’s medieval, historical castles of Vianden, Bourscheid and Esch-sur-Sûre, there are also the nature parks including Naturpark Our and Naturpark Öewersaue.  Traditional markets, outdoor concerts and medieval festivals are reviving this fascinating medieval time.

Land of the Red Rocks (Southern Region)

The Land of the Red Rocks owes its name to the red ore of the steel industry in Luxembourg, back in the industrial era. Today, the former mining area has established a new identity through combining ancient and new technologies. The region encompasses the major commercial cities  including Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange and Dudelange. Modern and trendy, these cities have a young and dynamic atmosphere. Street theater, rock festivals and concert halls form the cultural aspect. The region’s nature reserves have several mountain bike trails.

Take a day trip, go hiking, take a walk in the park, visit the castles, lakes and hills of Luxembourg and beyond. This is a great time to unwind, take some nice quiet breathes and focus on you and all that is around you. You just might be surprised at how much there is to offer if you just open yourself up and look beyond your everyday life in Luxembourg.

HealthyLux August theme – Anyone in Luxembourg?

How do I get through the summer without going crazy?

The summer break is here and you would think it was a time to take a break, relax and soak up the sun. But, as all of us know, it’s not quite that simple. The kids are home from school, we have holiday trips to plan and we have to visit our families in our home countries.

How do we fit all of this in without going crazy? I’m getting stressed just thinking about it.

  • We need to go home to visit our family and they stress me out.
  • How can I get this whole trip planned on time?
  • Have I packed everything we need for the trip, and if not what happens if I forget something?
  • Everyone wants to see us, how do we fit them all into our trip?
  • How will I keep the kids occupied?
  • Will everyone be happy during our trip and how do I make sure everyone is having fun?

Let’s just step back a little instead of getting stressed out with the big picture. No matter how hard you try or how much time or energy you put into it, it will never be a “Perfect” trip or vacation.

First we must accept that we can only do so much. We are human after all.

Just this once, try to let it flow. Picture a stream and you are the leaf on top of the water gently flowing downstream, going with the current.

If you don’t go with the flow, you will get stressed out, your family will get stressed out and everyone will be unhappy. But, if you just let it flow, everyone else will follow and you can go with the current and flow gently down the stream instead of getting snagged in the bushes or branches.

There is a Hopi Elders Poem that explains this well.

There is a river flowing now very fast,

It is so great and swift.

That there are those who will be afraid,

They will try to hold onto the shore.

They will feel they are being pulled apart,

And will suffer greatly.
Understand that the river knows its destination,

The elders say we must let go of the shore.

Push off into the middle of the river,

Keep our eyes open and our heads above water.

And I say; see who is in there with you,

Hold fast to them and celebrate!

— attributed to an unnamed Hopi elder, Hopi Nation, Oraibi, Arizona

So, instead of trying to grab onto the shore, just take a few minutes, take a deep breath, relax and go with the flow.

Tips on how to go with the flow.

  • Take a few minutes to just sit down, away from any distractions, and just breath. Take a deep breath and hold it for six seconds and let it out for six seconds and repeat.
  • Take a walk in nature and hug a tree. Walking barefoot on the earth (earthing) is also very relaxing and calms down your nervous system.
If you are familiar with mindfulness take a few minutes to focus on something in nature, outside your window, in your back yard, on the street – a tree, a bird, a flower. Just focus on this and listen to your breathing and slowly relax while you tune into this amazing piece of the universe. After a few minutes you can step out of this and you will see the world a lot more clearly.
  • Meditation is very relaxing, even if it’s just for 5 to 10 minutes. Just sit or lie down and close your eyes. Focus on your body and your breathing – the rhythm of your breath and how your body moves as you breath. Slowly release your stress from the tips of your toes to the top of your head as you focus on those areas and they become less stressed and relaxed with breathing.
  • EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a very effective way of bringing down your stress with just a few taps of your fingers on the energy meridians on your face, hands and chest. There are many tapping points but just tapping with your fingertips or palm on your chest or on the top of your head can be very effective.

Let it flow and have a nice, relaxing summer break.
